The cover of South African novel, Down at Jika Jika Tavern

Down at Jika Jika Tavern

A fast-paced, discussion-rich novel set in South Africa that tackles wildlife conservation and poaching, social inequality and land justice, and the intersection of faith, traditional beliefs, and Western influence.

Nonhle Ngubane leads a diverse cast as they delve into the world of wildlife crime in a small town in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal.

Developed in collaboration with English teacher Claire Geber, our Down at Jika Jika Tavern teacher’s guide and student workbook provide a comprehensive framework for teaching the novel. These resources go beyond literary analysis, covering comprehension, plot, characterisation, themes, figurative language, and grammar.

The resources are sold as class sets of Student Workbooks with the Teacher’s Guide included (the guide is not available alone). Each workbook unlocks author notes, QR-linked videos and read-alouds, with options to book author talks and workshops. Choose a Class, Grade, or Whole-Grade bundle; add top-ups anytime for new learners.
